Loss in Human-Robot Interaction: An Examination of Attachment, Persona, and Embodiment
The number of robots and embodied AI systems is rapidly increasing, as is the number of people who interact with them. Some individuals who interact with robots become attached to them, similar to how people may become attached to pets or inanimate objects (Ainsworth, 1969; Bowlby, 1982; Rabb et al., 2022). Attachment can have benefits in human robot interaction, such as continued use, increases in trust and motivation, and improved performance (Law et al., 2022). However, some individuals may become overly protective of their robots and hesitate to use them to protect them from being broken (Cappuccio et al., 2022; Carpenter, 2016; Carter et al., 2020). This can undermine the robot’s purpose, such as performing dangerous tasks in place of humans. My dissertation will investigate a method for lessening robot-related overprotection when attachment is present.

As a member of this group, I am contributing to a white paper and research dashboard about scalable remote crew design and beyond line of sight (BVLOS) operations for unmanned aircraft systems.

This was designed for a competition called mHealth put on by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Team members: Hannah Lettie, Kassidy Simpson, Lydia Melles, and Maddie McCarty.

Autonomous sanitation robot designed to clean buildings on McConnell Air Force Base. This was a capstone project which won the awards for Best Electrical Engineering/Computer Science Project and Best of Show at Wichita State’s engineering open house in 2021.
